What is considered large format tile?
The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) calls a tile large format if one edge is 15 inches (38 cm) or longer. Common sizes include 24×24, 24×48, and 48×48 inches. These tiles create a seamless, modern look with fewer grout lines.
Does large format tile require special installation?
Yes. TCNA standards require at least 95% mortar coverage for large format tiles (vs. 80% for standard tiles). This means back-buttering each tile in addition to troweling the substrate. The subfloor must also meet stricter flatness tolerances—no more than 1/8" variation in 10 feet.
Can large format tiles be installed on walls?
Absolutely. Large format porcelain panels up to 5×10 feet can be installed on walls for a dramatic, grout-minimal look. We use mechanical support systems and high-performance adhesives rated for vertical applications to ensure tiles remain securely bonded.
How flat does the floor need to be for large format tile?
For tiles with any edge 15 inches or longer, ANSI A108.02 allows no more than 1/8" variation in 10 feet and 1/16" in 24 inches. We check every floor with a straightedge, then grind high spots and fill low spots with self-levelling underlayment.
Can large format tile go over a wood subfloor?
Yes, if the floor is stiff enough. Porcelain needs a floor that meets the L/360 deflection limit, and natural stone needs L/720. Where a floor flexes, we add a subfloor layer or an uncoupling membrane before tiling.
Do you install large format tile in condos and strata buildings?
Yes. Concrete slabs in condo towers are stiff but rarely flat, so we level them first. We use sound-rated underlayment where strata bylaws require it, and we book elevators ahead for 24×48" and 48×48" tile.
Can large format tile go over radiant floor heating?
Yes. Large porcelain tile spreads heat well, which makes it a strong match for electric or hydronic in-floor heat. We plan movement joints for the heated area so the tile can expand and contract.
