Mosaic Tile FAQs
How is mosaic tile different from regular tile installation?
Mosaic tile comes pre-attached to mesh or paper-faced sheets (typically 12×12″) with hundreds of small tiles. Installation requires extra attention to grout-joint alignment between sheets, proper thinset trowel size, and careful back-buttering for glass mosaics. The result is intricate patterns no individual tile can achieve.
Which mosaics work for shower floors?
Small-format porcelain mosaics (2×2″, penny round, hexagon) are ideal for shower floors — the extra grout lines provide grip and conform to the drain slope. Look for tiles with DCOF ≥ 0.42 slip rating. Glass and polished stone are typically avoided on shower floors due to slip concerns.
Is glass mosaic harder to install?
Glass mosaic requires specialty installation: white polymer-modified thinset (not gray, which shadows through), specific notched trowels, complete back-buttering of each sheet, and non-abrasive grout floats. We've installed thousands of square feet of glass mosaic — it's one of our most-requested specialty services.
How much does mosaic backsplash installation cost?
Mosaic backsplash installation typically runs higher than standard tile due to the extra labor: glass mosaics around $15–$25/sq ft installed, stone mosaics $20–$35/sq ft, and intricate custom designs more. Tile cost is separate. We provide detailed itemized quotes after on-site assessment.
Can you install mosaic medallions or custom artwork?
Yes — we install pre-fabricated mosaic medallions, borders and custom artwork. Whether it's a center foyer medallion, a custom backsplash design, or a pre-made glass mosaic mural, we coordinate with mosaic artists and ensure flawless integration with surrounding tile.
